2009 Sangiovese in Carmel Valley - Ready to harvest

It's been a long time since Bill picked some grapes. This year he was out in the field due to a shortage of folks picking the grapes. Good excercise!

What can happen with an early Winter Storm!

An early winter storm brought 5 inches of rain to Carmel Valley. Our grapes were still not mature enough to harvest prior to the rain - so here is what happened. The weight of the rain, the amount of rain and then 30 mph winds severly damaged the vineyard. We were able to reset the vines after the storm, however we cannot repair the damage until winter. Stay tuned!

German Roadshow 2009

Travelling the German countryside each September is always a thrill. A chance to see our importer and customers that support Chateau Julien wine Estate. The event this year contained tastings in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hannover and Hamburg. The thrill of the event was to have Bobby Brower Jr. join me in Frankfurt. This was Bobby's first international tasting and a great learning experience.

Chateau Julien at the German Roadshow - 2009

The past week was the annual German Roadshow. We have participated for the past 5 years and this year was another successful show. While I had new support this year with the addition of Bobby Brower, joining me, the events in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Hannover and Hamburg were well attended. In fact, we only had 5 less visitors this year than in 2007 (a record year). Prior to the show, Bobby and I had a chance to visit the Rheingau and enjoy some of the German countryside.

Sangiovese grapes just reaching Verasion

Somehow the grapes know, each year, to begin the maturing process and turning from green hard berries to the soft red fruit we expect. Right on schedule this year the Sangiovese looks and tastes great.
